Wearing a mask correctly is a crucial step in ensuring its protective effectiveness. If worn improperly, even a mask with excellent filtration capabilities may offer reduced protection due to a poor seal. Therefore, it is essential to follow the correct procedure and pay attention to details when using a mask.

Before putting on a mask, clean your hands to prevent transferring bacteria, viruses, or dirt onto it. After removing the mask from its packaging, inspect it to ensure it is intact and free from damage, contamination, or dampness. For masks with distinct inner and outer layers, ensure the correct orientation; typically, the darker side faces outward, while the lighter side rests against the face. The mask should cover the mouth, nose, and chin, fully shielding the respiratory area.

While wearing the mask, adjust its position so that the metal or plastic strip at the bridge of the nose conforms to the contours of your face, minimizing air leakage from the top. Additionally, unfold the pleats to fully expand the mask, ensuring it covers the chin and that the edges fit snugly against the face. Significant gaps between the mask and the face can allow airborne particles to bypass the filtration layer and enter the respiratory tract, thereby compromising protection.

Avoid frequently touching the mask's surface while wearing it, and do not pull it down to expose your nose and mouth before putting it back on. If you need to remove the mask temporarily, do not place it in a contaminated area. Used masks must be disposed of properly in accordance with relevant guidelines rather than being discarded haphazardly. Replace the mask immediately if it becomes damaged, deformed, damp, or contaminated.

In addition to knowing the correct way to wear a mask, it is important to select the appropriate type of mask for the specific environment. Making the right choice and wearing the mask correctly in daily life can enhance personal protection, reduce exposure to airborne harmful substances and pathogens, and better safeguard your health.
